National Park Reservation Guide

Wanting to plan a national parks trip? Wondering if you'll need reservations? Confused on when to make your reservation? We have all that and more below.

National Parks

The national park system protects way more land than you might realize. There are technically 423 different parks and lands under the stewardship of the National Park System. But of those 423 parks, only 63 have received the status of "national park."

Below we are going to look at the reservations you'll need for those 63 national parks this year. And we will add some helpful tips on staying ahead of the game with your planning.

Reservations

The need for reservations is real these days. National parks have become increasingly popular. In 2022, nearly 312 million people visited a national park—and that number is expected to continue to increase.

What types of reservations can you expect?

Timed Entry Reservations

These were created to help alleviate some of the long lines and congestion at different points throughout the day. With a "Timed Entry Reservation," you will still need to pay your entrance fee, but you will get a two-hour time slot to enter a park. The hope is you will spend less time waiting in line and more time in the park.

Road Reservations

There are certain scenic roads inside national parks that get a ton of visitors—and for good reason. These roads can become overly congested and create issues for traffic flow. To alleviate some of these stresses, you might need a permit for different times throughout the day.

Hike Reservations

Certain hikes inside national parks receive more visitors than they can handle. Some of these hikes are incredibly narrow, on the edge of deep drops, and others just need time to rest. For this reason, you might see certain hikes that need permits. Be sure to investigate these hikes to see if they are on your list. If so, get your permit early.

Camping Reservations

To help you connect with campgrounds, we will highlight the National Park campgrounds that can host RVs. When doing this, we will largely focus on the lower 48 and all of those that are RV-accessible in Alaska.

Now let's get started.

On top of the mountain, you will be joined by hundreds of people wrapped in blankets anticipating the sunrise. This experience is a right of passage for your Acadia National Park visit.
