General Overview

Tuscarora State Forest spans across 96,025 acres through the counties of Cumberland, Franklin, Huntingdon, Juniata, Mifflin, and Perry in Pennsylvania. Named after the Tuscarora Mountain and managed by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR), the forest provides ample opportunities for various outdoor activities, including camping, hiking, fishing, and hunting.

Camping Information

  • Dispersed Camping: Tuscarora State Forest offers dispersed camping for those seeking solitude. This type of camping allows campers to set up their tents anywhere within the forest boundaries, as long as they follow Leave No Trace principles and are at least 200 feet from any stream or source of water to protect water quality.

  • Motorized Camping: For those with vehicles, there are designated motorized camping spots along some of the forest roads. These sites typically provide a more primitive camping experience without the amenities of a developed campground.

  • Primitive Campsites: There are also a limited number of primitive campsites located in the forest. These may provide minimal amenities such as a fire ring or picnic table, but in most cases do not offer toilet or water facilities.

  • Group Camping: For organized groups, Tuscarora State Forest has designated group camping areas. These may require a reservation and/or a special use permit, particularly for larger groups.

  • Cabins: There is also the possibility of renting forest cabins, which are managed by the State Forest District office.

Permits and Regulations

  • Camping Permits: For certain types of camping, a free permit is required if you plan to stay more than one night in the same location. Check with the Tuscarora State Forest District office for details.

  • Campfires: Open fires are permitted but must be kept within existing fire rings, and campers must follow any fire regulations or bans that may be in place during their visit.

  • Conservation Practices: Campers are expected to practice Leave No Trace principles, which include packing out all trash, minimizing campfire impact, and respecting wildlife and other campers.

  • Fishing and Hunting: A Pennsylvania state license is required for fishing and hunting. The forest is home to deer, turkey, and other game species. Regulations and seasons are set by the Pennsylvania Game Commission.

Recreation Opportunities

  • Hiking: There are numerous hiking trails throughout the forest, including a part of the famous Appalachian Trail.

  • Mountain Biking: Many of the forest trails and roads are open to mountain biking.

  • Horseback Riding: Equestrian use is permitted on designated bridle trails and roads in the forest.

  • Winter Activities: During the winter months, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, and snowshoeing are popular activities.

Wildlife and Natural Features

Tuscarora State Forest features mountain streams, hardwood forests, and vistas. Wildlife includes species typical of Pennsylvania woodlands, and the diverse habitats support a variety of plant and animal life.
