Overview

George Washington and Jefferson National Forests are two U.S. National Forests that are administratively combined and commonly referred to as the "GWJNF". The combined forest is located in the Appalachian Mountains and spans across parts of Virginia, West Virginia, and Kentucky. It offers a wide range of outdoor recreational opportunities including camping, hiking, fishing, and wildlife viewing.

Camping Information

Types of Camping:

  • Dispersed Camping: This is primitive, undesignated camping in the backcountry. There are no amenities, and campers must follow Leave No Trace principles.
  • Designated Campgrounds: These may offer more amenities such as picnic tables, fire rings, potable water, and toilets. There are numerous campgrounds within the GWJNF to choose from, each with different features and fees.
  • Group Camping: Some areas are specifically designed for large groups with corresponding facilities.

Permits and Reservations:

  • Some campgrounds require reservations, which can be made through Recreation.gov.
  • Backcountry or dispersed camping may not require a permit, but it is important to check the local regulations.

Fees:

  • Campground fees vary depending on location and facilities provided.
  • There may be fees for other recreational activities or parking in certain areas.

Rules and Regulations:

  • Campfires: Check for current fire conditions and restrictions. Use existing rings where provided, and ensure all fires are fully extinguished before leaving.
  • Wildlife: Store food securely and maintain a clean camp to avoid attracting wildlife.
  • Trash: Pack out what you pack in, as many areas may not have trash collection services.
  • Stay Limit: Typically, there is a 14-day limit on camping within any 28 consecutive days in the forest.

Safety:

  • Always be prepared for changing weather conditions.
  • Have a map, compass, or GPS, as cell service may be unreliable.
  • Let someone know your itinerary and expected return time.

Recreation

Along with camping, the forest offers numerous recreational activities:

Hiking: There are over 2,000 miles of trails, including a portion of the famous Appalachian Trail.

Fishing and Hunting: Fishing is popular in the many streams and lakes. State fishing licenses are required. Hunting is also permitted with appropriate state licenses.

Biking and Horseback Riding: There are trails designated for mountain biking and horseback riding.

Wildlife Watching: The forest is home to a diverse array of wildlife, so bring binoculars and enjoy.

Conservation Efforts

GWJNF is managed by the USDA Forest Service with a focus on sustaining the health, diversity, and productivity of the nation's forests. Visitors are encouraged to contribute to conservation efforts by practicing Leave No Trace principles and respecting the natural environment.
