Location and Access

Breiland Slough Cabin Campground is located within the vast wilderness of the Tongass National Forest in Southeast Alaska. This remote destination provides a unique opportunity for campers to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of Alaska's landscapes.

Access to Breiland Slough Cabin Campground usually requires either a boat or a floatplane, as it is situated on the mainland within the Stikine-LeConte Wilderness, about 35 air miles from Wrangell and 45 air miles from Petersburg. The cabin is on the delta of the Stikine River, which is affected by tidal fluctuations, making the timing of boat travel important.

Cabin Features and Facilities

The Breiland Slough Cabin is a traditional A-frame, which is surrounded by a wetland area with boardwalks. Here are the basic amenities:

  • Sleeping Arrangements: The cabin can accommodate up to 7 people and typically includes wooden bunks.
  • Cooking Facilities: There is usually a table, wood stove for heating, and sometimes an outside fire grill.
  • Water: Drinkable water is not provided; campers must either bring their own or be prepared to treat water from a natural source.
  • Sanitation: The site typically includes a pit toilet.

Campers need to carry in all their own food, cookware, bedding, and, in some instances, even their own firewood or wood pellets.

Activities and Recreation

The surrounding area of Tongass National Forest offers various recreational activities which include:

  • Fishing: The Stikine River and nearby streams are popular for salmon and trout fishing.
  • Wildlife Viewing: The wetlands and forest areas are great for observing birds, bears, and other wildlife.
  • Hiking: Trails may not be well-defined, but the wilderness offers adventurous hiking opportunities.
  • Boating and Kayaking: The waters around the cabin are ideal for boaters and kayakers, with the stunning backdrop of Southeast Alaska.
  • Photography: The spectacular scenery, including wetlands, rivers, and mountain views, provides excellent photo opportunities.

Reservations and Considerations

  • Reservations are mandatory and can be made through the USDA Forest Service’s reservation system. The cabin typically needs to be booked well in advance, especially during peak summer months.
  • Weather in Southeast Alaska is unpredictable, with heavy rain and cold conditions possible even in summer. Campers should be prepared for a variety of weather conditions.
  • Bears and Wildlife: Proper food storage and bear safety precautions are critical in this wilderness area to prevent attracting wildlife to the campsite.
  • Leave No Trace: As with any wilderness area, the Leave No Trace principles should be closely followed to preserve the natural environment for future visitors.

Before setting out, it's essential for campers to check the latest information with the U.S. Forest Service for any changes to services or access, along with any special restrictions or advisories that may be in place.
