Location and Access

Petersburg Lake Cabin Campground is located within the Tongass National Forest near the town of Petersburg, in Southeast Alaska. The cabin is usually accessed by float plane or by hiking the Petersburg Lake Trail, which is around 10.5 miles long and starts at the end of a local road in Petersburg. Boating access is possible when lake ice conditions allow.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Reservations: The cabin is typically available for reservations year-round, and because of its popularity and limited availability, it is advisable to book well in advance through the Recreation.gov website or by calling their reservation line.

  • Pricing: There is a nightly fee for staying in the cabin, which should be verified on the Forest Service website or Recreation.gov as fees can change.

  • Accommodations: The cabin is a simple, rustic shelter that can accommodate up to 6 persons. It usually includes bunks (without mattresses), a table, benches, a wood stove for heat, and basic cooking utensils. However, check the current amenities before you go in case there have been changes.

  • No Electricity/Water: There is no electricity or running water at the cabin. Visitors must bring their own supplies, including drinking water, bedding, and a source of light.

  • Pack It In, Pack It Out: Visitors are required to pack out all trash and leave the cabin clean for the next occupants.

  • Bears and Wildlife: The Tongass National Forest is bear country. Proper food storage and handling are a necessity to avoid attracting bears and other wildlife.

  • Weather: Be prepared for rain and cool weather, as Southeast Alaska's climate can be very wet and unpredictable. The cabin is situated at a high elevation and snow can be present well into the summer months.

Activities

  • Fishing: The lakes and streams in the area are known for trout and salmon fishing, particularly during the respective seasons. Check for Alaska Department of Fish and Game regulations and obtain necessary permits or licenses.

  • Hiking: The hike to the cabin along the Petersburg Lake Trail offers beautiful views of muskeg, forests, and mountain scenery. There are also opportunities for off-trail hiking around the lake.

  • Wildlife Viewing: Tongass National Forest is rich with wildlife, including bears, eagles, and Sitka black-tailed deer. Always observe wildlife from a safe distance.

  • Boating and Canoeing: The lake offers opportunities for canoeing, kayaking, and small boat use. Be aware of the weather as conditions can change rapidly.

  • Winter Activities: In the winter, activities like ice fishing, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing can be enjoyed by those prepared for the cold and snow.

Safety and Considerations

  • Preparation: Make sure you are fully prepared with enough food, warm clothing, and safety gear. Let someone know your plans and expected return time.

  • Navigation: Since weather can impact visibility, it's important to have a map, compass, or GPS for navigation, especially if arriving by foot or boat.

  • Emergency: Cell phone reception is likely to be unreliable or nonexistent, so consider bringing a satellite phone or emergency locator beacon for emergencies.

  • First Aid: Always carry a first aid kit and be aware that help may be several hours or even days away.

  • Local Regulations: Familiarize yourself with local rules and regulations, such as campfire restrictions and wilderness guidelines.

Before embarking on your trip to Petersburg Lake Cabin, it's essential to get the latest information from the U.S. Forest Service or the local ranger station to ensure you have a safe and enjoyable experience.
