Location and Access

Crescent Lake Cabin is located in the Chugach National Forest in Alaska, USA. The cabin is remotely situated near the shores of Crescent Lake and is accessible by floatplane, foot, or by skiing, depending on the season. Floatplane is the most popular and quickest form of transportation, especially in the summer months. If hiking in, visitors use the Carter Lake Trail which is approximately 6.5 miles long and can be challenging due to the terrain.

Cabin Details

The cabin is a public use cabin managed by the USDA Forest Service. It is typically a small, simple, rustic shelter that provides basic accommodation for visitors. The cabin generally includes:

  • Bunks: Usually wooden platforms that can accommodate sleeping pads and bags.
  • Table and Chairs: Basic furniture for dining and other activities.
  • Wood Stove: For heating and sometimes cooking, although it's important to bring your own firewood or be prepared to gather wood in permissible areas.

It does not have plumbing, so there is no running water, and electricity is also not available. Users are expected to bring their own supplies including food, bedding, lighting, and cookware.

Activities

  • Fishing: Crescent Lake is home to a variety of fish species including salmon and trout, making it a popular spot for fishing enthusiasts.
  • Hiking: There are several trails leading to and around the cabin offering scenic views of the surrounding areas.
  • Wildlife Viewing: The area is rich in wildlife such as bears, moose, and a variety of bird species.
  • Boating: Visitors can use canoes or kayaks on Crescent Lake. Boating is a great way to explore the lake and get closer to the glaciers.

Reservation and Fees

Reservations for the cabin are necessary and can be made through the Recreation.gov website or by calling their reservation line. The cabin usually has a fee per night, which helps maintain the site for continued public use.

Rules and Regulations

  • Leave No Trace: All visitors are expected to pack out what they bring in and leave the cabin and surrounding area as they found it.
  • Wildlife Precautions: Proper storage of food and trash is mandatory to avoid attracting bears and other wildlife.
  • Fire Safety: Use the wood stove responsibly and ensure all fires are completely out before leaving.
  • Restrictions: There could be seasonal or situational restrictions in place, such as fire bans or limits on group sizes.

Preparations

Visitors should be fully prepared for backcountry conditions:

  • Weather: Conditions can change rapidly, so weather-appropriate clothing and gear are essential.
  • Navigation: Bring maps, compass, or GPS, as electronic devices may not work in remote locations.
  • Emergency Supplies: First aid kit, signaling devices, and knowledge of survival techniques are important.
  • Food and Water: Visitors must bring all their own food and have a way to purify lake or stream water for drinking.
