Location and Access

Hager Mountain Lookout is a unique and sought-after camping experience located in the Fremont-Winema National Forest, Oregon. The lookout is perched at an elevation of approximately 7,195 feet offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. Access to the lookout can be challenging, particularly in the winter months when the roads are not plowed. Typically, it requires a 4-mile hike, snowshoe, or ski trip up a steep grade to reach the lookout. The gate at the bottom of the road is closed during the winter. It is important to check current road and trail conditions with the local ranger district before embarking on your trip.

Reservations and Season

Reservations are a must for staying at Hager Mountain Lookout. The facility is quite popular and typically books up far in advance. It is available for rent year-round, but the experience can vary greatly by season. Winter access, as mentioned, requires traversing snow-packed trails, while during the other seasons, the conditions are less formidable.

You can book the lookout through the Recreation.gov website or by calling the reservation line. Make sure to reserve early due to its high demand.
