Bonita Canyon Campground Information

Overview: Bonita Canyon Campground is located within Chiricahua National Monument, deeply nestled in the Chiricahua Mountains of southeastern Arizona. This campground is the only developed camping area inside the monument and offers a serene outdoor experience for visitors looking to explore the unique rock formations, wildlife, and hiking trails that the area has to offer.

Location: The campground is situated approximately 37 miles southeast of Willcox, Arizona. It can be accessed via E Bonita Canyon Road through the monument's scenic drive, which winds its way up to the campground.

Season: Bonita Canyon Campground is typically open year-round, but visitors should be aware of changes due to weather conditions, particularly in winter when snow can make roads impassable.

Campsites: There are 25 individual tent and RV campsites available. These sites usually have:

  • A picnic table
  • A grill or fire pit
  • Space for a tent or a small RV (no hookups and there are size restrictions for RVs, typically under 29 feet)

Group Camping: In addition to single-family sites, there is a group campsite available for larger parties. The group site can accommodate 8 to 24 people and must be reserved in advance.

Amenities:

  • Flush toilets
  • Running water (although there are no shower facilities)
  • An amphitheater for ranger-led programs (seasonal)
  • Access to trails and visitor information at the nearby Visitor Center

Reservations: Many sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis, but advanced reservations are strongly recommended, especially during peak seasons such as spring and fall. Reservations can be made online via the National Recreation Reservation Service or by phone.

Fees: There is a nightly fee to camp at Bonita Canyon Campground. Fees are subject to change, so it's advised to check the current rates when planning your trip.

Pets: Pets are allowed in the campground but must be restrained on a leash not longer than 6 feet. They are not permitted on most of the trails, in the visitor center, or in the buildings.

Activities: Visitors to the campground can enjoy a range of activities such as:

  • Hiking on the monument's 17 miles of day-use trails
  • Wildlife viewing and birdwatching
  • Stargazing, as the monument is designated as an International Dark Sky Park
  • Scenic drives through the rock formations

Leave No Trace: As always, visitors are encouraged to adhere to Leave No Trace principles to minimize their impact on the natural environment. This includes packing out all trash, respecting wildlife and other visitors, and preserving the park's natural and cultural resources.

Weather: Weather at Chiricahua National Monument can be variable. Summer can be hot with afternoon thunderstorms, while winters may bring cold temperatures and snow. Spring and fall usually offer more moderate temperatures. Checking the weather forecast ahead of the visit is recommended.

Accessibility: Some facilities and campsites are designed to be accessible to those with disabilities, but due to the natural terrain, not all areas may be easily accessible. Contact the park directly for specific information on accessibility.

Safety Considerations:

  • Be prepared for quickly changing weather.
  • Carry enough water, especially during the hot summer months.
  • Check for current advisories, such as fire restrictions or wildlife alerts.

Contact Information: For the most current information and for reservations, contact the National Recreation Reservation Service or the Chiricahua National Monument's visitor center directly.
