General Information

Desert View Campground is one of the camping facilities within the Grand Canyon National Park, located approximately 25 miles (40 kilometers) to the east of Grand Canyon Village, near the park's east entrance and the Desert View Visitor Center. It offers a more remote and less crowded camping experience compared to the more central Mather Campground.

Campground Details

Season and Availability: Desert View Campground is generally open from mid-April through mid-October, depending on weather conditions. The availability may vary, so it is advisable to check with the National Park Service (NPS) or the park's official website for the latest information.

Reservations: Unlike Mather Campground, Desert View traditionally operated on a first-come, first-served basis. However, due to evolving management practices and increasing visitor numbers, it is essential to check whether this policy has changed and if reservations may be required.

Campsites: The campground typically offers 50 campsites suitable for tents and small RVs. These sites include a fire ring, picnic table, and access to restrooms. There are no hookups for water or electricity available at the campsites.

Amenities & Facilities: Campground amenities usually include restrooms with flush toilets, drinking water, and a seasonal camp store. There is no RV dumping station. Campers need to pack in all their supplies and pack out all their trash, adhering to the Leave No Trace principles.

Fees: A nightly fee is charged for camping at Desert View. The fee is subject to change, so visitors should verify current rates through the official NPS website or by contacting the park directly.

Activities: Visitors at Desert View Campground can enjoy stunning views of the Grand Canyon, including the Colorado River and Painted Desert. Hiking, ranger-led programs, wildlife viewing, and visiting the nearby Watchtower are popular activities.

Important Regulations

Fire Restrictions: Due to the risk of wildfires, fire regulations are strictly enforced. Wood and charcoal fires may be prohibited during high-risk periods, and campers must always attend to their fires.

Pets: Pets are allowed in the campground but must be leashed at all times. They are not permitted on the trails below the rim, inside buildings, or on park buses.

Quiet Hours: Quiet hours are typically enforced from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. to ensure a peaceful experience for all visitors.

Maximum Stay: There is usually a limit on the length of stay, often set at 14 days.

Wildlife Precautions: The park is home to wildlife such as squirrels, ravens, and occasionally elk. Campers should store food securely and never feed the animals to protect both wildlife and themselves.

Altitude: The campground is situated at a high altitude, over 7,000 feet (2,134 meters), which can affect individuals sensitive to elevation changes.

Accessibility

The campground provides some sites that are more accessible for visitors with disabilities. Visitors with specific needs should check with the park in advance to make arrangements.

Booking and Further Information

To book a campsite or find out more about current conditions and regulations, visitors should consult the Grand Canyon National Park's official website or contact the park directly. It is advisable to plan ahead, especially during peak travel seasons, to ensure availability and a smooth camping experience.
