Directions: To reach the campground, take Highway 168 northeast from Clovis to Shaver Lake. Continue through the town of Shaver Lake to Dorabelle Road and follow the signs to the campground.

Camping Facilities and Amenities

Campsites: Dorabelle Campground has several tent and RV campsites, each equipped with a picnic table, fire ring, and a food storage locker. Hookups are not provided, which is typical for forest service campgrounds, so be prepared for a more rustic camping experience.

Utilities: There are no electric, water, or sewer hookups available. However, there are drinking water spigots and vault toilets throughout the campground.

RVs: RVs are welcome, but note the limitations on hookups and the maximum vehicle length that can be accommodated—which could be around 30 feet, but always check current restrictions before planning your trip.

Reservations and Fees

Reservations: Reservations are generally recommended, especially during peak season, and can be made through the Recreation.gov website or by phone. Some sites may be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Fees: The camping fees can vary, so it is best to check the most current rates online at the time of booking. There may also be additional charges for extra vehicles.

Activities and Recreation

Swimming and Boating: Shaver Lake offers swimming, boating, waterskiing, and fishing opportunities. A boat ramp is available nearby at the Shaver Lake marina.

Fishing: The lake is known for trout, kokanee salmon, and smallmouth bass fishing. Remember to check the California fishing regulations and obtain the necessary fishing license.

Hiking: Trails of various difficulty levels are accessible from the campground or within a short drive, offering the chance to explore the Sierra National Forest and its majestic scenery.

Wildlife Viewing: The area is home to diverse wildlife, so keep an eye out for deer, squirrels, and a variety of birds. Always maintain a safe distance from wildlife and secure your food properly.

Notes and Considerations

  • Be bear-aware. The Sierra National Forest is bear country, so use food storage lockers and be cautious with your food and trash.
  • Weather can be unpredictable, with cold nights even in summer, so come prepared with appropriate clothing and gear.
  • Due to the pine beetle infestation, some areas may have tree-felling activities for safety reasons; check for any advisories or area closures.
  • Fire restrictions are common, particularly during dry conditions. Always check the current fire regulations before starting a campfire.
