Overview

Gold Bluffs Beach Camp is nestled in the dunes along the coastline within Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park, which is part of the larger Redwood National and State Parks in Northern California. Known for its scenic beauty, the campsite is an attractive spot for campers looking to enjoy both the majestic redwoods and the Pacific Ocean.

Getting There

Gold Bluffs Beach Camp can be accessed by Davison Road, a narrow, unpaved road that can be closed due to weather conditions. Large RVs or trailers are not recommended due to the road's limitations. It’s very important to check current road conditions with the park prior to your visit.

Camping Facilities

The camp offers basic amenities including:

  • Campsites: There are 26 standard campsites available for tents or small trailers/RVs. Sites cannot be reserved and operate on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Picnic Tables and Fire Rings: Each campsite typically comes with a picnic table and a fire ring.
  • Restrooms: The camp provides restrooms with flush toilets and solar-powered showers.
  • Potable Water: Drinking water is available on-site.

Activities

  • Hiking: There are several trails nearby, including the easy Beach Trail and the more challenging Fern Canyon loop, which takes you through a lush canyon with walls covered in ferns.
  • Wildlife Viewing: The area is home to elk, which can often be seen in the meadows or even on the beach.
  • Beachcombing: Miles of beach to explore for shells, driftwood, and sometimes even agates.

Regulations

  • Campfires: Fires are allowed only in provided fire rings and with firewood purchased from the campground to prevent the spread of tree diseases.
  • Food Storage: To protect against wildlife intrusions, particularly from raccoons, all food must be stored in provided food lockers or in secure containers in your vehicle.
  • Pets: Dogs are permitted in the campsite area but must be kept on a leash at all times and are not allowed on trails or on the beach.
  • Quiet Hours: There are quiet hours that campers are expected to adhere to, ensuring a peaceful experience for everyone.

Weather and What to Bring

The coastal climate can be foggy and damp, or sunny and windy. Campers should be prepared for rapidly changing conditions by bringing:

  • Warm clothing
  • Waterproof gear
  • UV protection for sunny days
  • Camping equipment suited for damp conditions

Reservations and Fees

  • Reservations: As mentioned, sites at Gold Bluffs Beach Camp are first-come, first-served, and you cannot book in advance.
  • Fees: There is a nightly fee for camping, and campers should check the latest rates before visiting since fees can change.

Conservation

As part of the larger Redwoods National and State Parks, the area is protected for its natural and cultural resources. Campers should adhere to Leave No Trace principles, which include disposing of waste properly, leaving what they find, and being considerate of wildlife and other visitors.

Contacts and Emergency Information

For the most current information, regulations, and any emergencies or incidents, campers should contact park officials directly. It’s always a good idea to have the contact information for the local ranger station when camping in remote areas.

Please Note: Conditions and facilities can change due to weather and seasonal variations. Always check with the state park or local agencies for the most current information before planning your trip.
