Camping at Plaskett Creek Campground
Location and Access
Plaskett Creek Campground is located in Los Padres National Forest on the central coast of California. It's situated across Highway 1 from Sand Dollar Beach, the largest sandy beach in Big Sur. The campground offers easy access to the beach, scenic views, and opportunities for outdoor recreation.
Campground Features
The campground features family campsites that can accommodate tents, trailers, and RVs, although hookups are not available. Each site typically provides a picnic table and a fire ring, and the campground offers amenities such as potable water and restrooms with flush toilets.
Recreational Activities
Campers can enjoy a number of activities including:
- Beach Access: Sand Dollar Beach is known for surfing, swimming, fishing, beachcombing, and picnicking.
- Hiking: Nearby trails offer beautiful hikes. The Jade Cove Trail, for example, is popular for both hiking and jade hunting.
- Wildlife Viewing: The area offers a chance to see California condors, sea otters, and during migration seasons, gray whales.
Reservations and Fees
Reservations are highly recommended, especially during peak season, which typically runs from late spring to early fall. You can reserve a campsite via Recreation.gov or by calling the reservation system. Fees vary based on the site type and time of year.
Campground Regulations
- Fire Restrictions: Check current fire conditions and restrictions before arrival, as campfires might be prohibited during high fire danger periods.
- Pets: Pets are usually allowed but must be on a leash and under control at all times.
- Quiet Hours: Respect quiet hours, which are typically between 10 PM and 6 AM.
- Leave No Trace: Practice "Leave No Trace" principles to minimize your impact on the environment.
Seasonal Information
The campground is typically open year-round, but some sites may be closed off-season due to weather. Peak season offers the best weather conditions but can also be the most crowded.
Safety Tips
Be prepared for changing weather conditions and bring suitable clothing. The ocean can be dangerous with strong currents and cold water—swim with caution. Be aware of wildlife and maintain a safe distance, especially from larger animals like mountain lions or snakes.
Access and Service Limitations
Cell service might be spotty or non-existent. The closest services and supplies are several miles away, so it's best to come prepared with all the food, water, and gas you'll need for your stay.
