General Information

Tuolumne Meadows is a section of Yosemite National Park, located in the eastern part of the park on the high elevation plateau of the Sierra Nevada range, at about 8,600 feet above sea level. It is one of the largest high-elevation meadows in the Sierra Nevada. This area is renowned for its beautiful wildflower displays, winding rivers, and granite peaks. Visitors come here to hike, rock climb, backpack, and enjoy the serene beauty of the alpine landscape.

Camping Details

Tuolumne Meadows offers a popular campground within Yosemite National Park, which operates on a seasonal basis, typically from June through late September, depending on weather conditions and snowpack. Here are some important details to know:

  • Reservations: Campsites at Tuolumne Meadows Campground are highly sought after. While some of the campsites are available on a first-come, first-served basis, the majority can be reserved in advance through Recreation.gov, and it is strongly recommended to secure a reservation as early as possible.

  • Campsite Facilities: The campground offers tent and RV sites, though RVs are subject to length restrictions due to the smaller size of the campsites. Each campsite typically includes a fire ring, picnic table, and food storage locker.

  • Food Storage: Due to active wildlife, including bears, all food and scented items must be stored in food lockers or bear-proof containers. This rule is strictly enforced to protect both wildlife and visitors.

  • Amenities: The campground provides basic amenities such as bathrooms with flush toilets and drinking water. However, there are no shower or laundry facilities onsite.

  • Altitude Considerations: Given the high altitude of Tuolumne Meadows, visitors should be aware of the potential for altitude sickness and take appropriate precautions.

  • Public Transport: YARTS (Yosemite Area Regional Transportation System) may provide seasonal bus service from various locations outside the park to Tuolumne Meadows.

  • Shuttle Service: Inside the park, a free shuttle service usually runs during the summer months, providing transportation between various points of interest within Tuolumne Meadows.

Regulations and Safety

  • Wildlife: Visitors should always maintain a safe distance from wildlife and be aware that feeding animals is prohibited and dangerous.

  • Fire Regulations: Campfires may be restricted or prohibited during times of high fire danger. Check the current fire regulations before lighting any fires.

  • Weather Prep: Mountain weather can be unpredictable, and snow can fall in Tuolumne Meadows even in summer. Always be prepared for changing conditions.
