Park Hours: Staunton State Park is open daily. However, park hours can be seasonally adjusted. It is generally open from sunrise to sunset for day use.

Entrance Fees: The park requires a daily entrance fee or a valid annual Colorado State Parks pass. As of my last knowledge update, daily vehicle passes typically range from $8 to $10. Fees can change, so checking the current rates before visiting is advisable.

Camping Information

Facilities: Staunton State Park offers backcountry camping experiences. Unlike other state parks, there are no drive-up campsites, which means you will need to hike to your campsite.

Campsites: The park provides a number of designated backcountry campsites. These are typically equipped with a tent pad, a fire ring (usage dependent on current fire restrictions), and a bear-proof food storage locker.

Reservations: Camping reservations are required and can be made through the Colorado Parks and Wildlife reservation system. It's recommended to book your site well in advance, especially during peak camping season.

Amenities: Since Staunton State Park offers backcountry camping, services are minimal. There are no electric hookups, showers, or flush toilets available at the campsites. Campers should be prepared to pack in all necessary supplies, including water and pack out all trash.

Fire Information: Campfires are only allowed in designated fire rings and are subject to current fire restrictions. Always check the park's current conditions or contact the park directly for the latest information on fire bans or restrictions.

Water Access: Potable water is not available at the backcountry campsites. Campers must bring enough water for their needs or have the means to purify water from natural sources if allowed.

Recreational Activities

Hiking and Biking: Staunton State Park is renowned for its extensive trail system, offering over 20 miles of hiking and biking trails.

Rock Climbing: The park features several climbing areas for those interested in rock climbing, though climbers must register with the park before climbing.

Fishing and Wildlife Viewing: Fishing is available in the park's ponds, and due to its ecosystem diversity, wildlife viewing opportunities are aplenty.

Horseback Riding: Horseback riders can enjoy certain trails in the park, but they need to bring their own horses.

Additional Tips

  • Weather Preparedness: The park's elevation ranges from approximately 8,100 to 10,000 feet, which means weather can change rapidly. Be sure to pack for all conditions and check the forecast before heading out.
  • Leave No Trace: Follow Leave No Trace principles to minimize your impact on the natural environment.
  • Pets: Pets are allowed in the park but must be kept on a 6-foot leash at all times.
  • Wildlife Safety: Be aware of the local wildlife and take necessary precautions, such as storing food properly and keeping a safe distance from animals.

Before heading out to Staunton State Park, always verify with the park or official state park website for the newest information and regulations, as conditions and rules can change over time.
