Camping in Haleakalā National Park
When planning a camping trip to Haleakalā National Park, there is a wealth of important information to consider to ensure that your adventure is both enjoyable and in compliance with the park rules.
Types of Camping
Drive-Up Camping:
- Hosmer Grove Campground: Located near the park entrance at the summit area, this campground is accessible by vehicle and operates on a first-come, first-served basis. Ideal for tent camping, it is equipped with picnic tables, BBQ grills, and pit toilets.
Wilderness Camping:
- Wilderness Cabins: The park has three wilderness cabins that are accessible only by trail. Reservations are required and can be made online. Cabins are equipped with sleeping bunks, a wood-burning stove, and basic cooking utensils.
- Backcountry Camping: Campsites are available for those who prefer to carry their gear and camp in more remote areas. The two primary wilderness campsites are at Hōlua, near the Halemau'u Trail, and Palikū, at the end of the Sliding Sands Trail. Permits are required and can be obtained online or at the visitor center.
Permits and Reservations
- Wilderness camping and cabin use require a permit. Permits for camping must be obtained online up to two months in advance, and cabin reservations can be made up to 180 days in advance.
- Drive-up camping at Hosmer Grove does not require a permit, but it's first-come, first-served, so you should plan to arrive early to secure a spot, especially during the busy season.
Fees and Passes
- Entrance fees are required for access to Haleakalā National Park. These fees can change, so be sure to check the current rates on the park's official website.
- Camping fees are separate from entrance fees. Check the latest cost for wilderness permits and cabin reservations when planning your trip.
Rules and Regulations
- Camping Limits: You can camp for a maximum of three nights per month in the wilderness areas, with no more than two nights at any one site.
- Pack It In, Pack It Out: Whatever you bring into the park, you're responsible for taking it out. This rule helps keep the park clean and preserves its natural beauty.
- Campfires: Campfires are not allowed in the park due to the risk of wildfires. Portable camping stoves are permitted for cooking.
- Weather: Prepare for unpredictable weather by bringing appropriate clothing and gear. The summit area can be particularly cold, even in summer.
- Wildlife: Feeding wildlife is prohibited and food storage rules are strictly enforced to protect both animals and visitors.
- Quiet Hours: Respect other campers by observing quiet hours from 10 pm to 6 am.
- Pets: Pets are not allowed in wilderness areas and must be leashed in other parts of the park.
Safety and Preparation
- Altitude Sickness: Haleakalā's summit is over 10,000 feet above sea level. Take precautions for altitude sickness by acclimatizing and staying hydrated.
- Sun Protection: The sun is stronger at higher elevations, so use sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat.
- Stay on Trails: To protect the delicate ecosystems, always stay on marked trails.
- Emergency Plan: Have a safety plan in place. Cell service may not be available in all areas of the park, so let someone know your itinerary.
Additional Tips
- Sunrise Viewing: The summit of Haleakalā is a popular spot for sunrise viewings, which may require a separate reservation.
- Resource Protection: Practice Leave No Trace principles to minimize your impact on the environment.
