The Sylvania Wilderness encompasses 18,327 acres within the Ottawa National Forest in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. This wilderness area is known for its old-growth forest and 34 named lakes. Sylvania Wilderness backcountry camping offers a true wilderness experience, where visitors can enjoy solitude, silence, and a chance to connect with nature.

Permits and Reservations

Bold Permits: A permit is required for all overnight trips in the Sylvania Wilderness. Campers need to obtain a visitor's permit before camping, which can be done at the Sylvania Wilderness Entrance Station or at the Ottawa National Forest Supervisor's Office.

Bold Reservations: Campsites in Sylvania Wilderness are often available on a first-come, first-served basis, but reservations are recommended, especially during peak seasons. Reservations can be made through the National Recreation Reservation System (Recreation.gov).

Campsites and Facilities

There are a number of designated campsites available in the Sylvania Wilderness. These sites typically include a tent pad, a fire ring, and a wilderness latrine. It's essential to use designated sites to minimize environmental impact and follow Leave No Trace principles.

Campfire Regulations

Campfires are only permitted within the metal fire rings provided at designated campsites. Gathering of dead and down wood for campfires is allowed, but cutting live vegetation is prohibited. Always make sure fires are completely extinguished before leaving.

Water Sources

Natural water sources like lakes and streams are available, but it is recommended to treat water by boiling, filtering, or using chemical treatment before consumption to avoid waterborne illnesses.

Leave No Trace

The Leave No Trace principles are especially important in a wilderness area:

  • Plan ahead and prepare
  • Travel and camp on durable surfaces
  • Dispose of waste properly
  • Leave what you find
  • Minimize campfire impacts
  • Respect wildlife
  • Be considerate of other visitors

Wildlife

The Sylvania Wilderness is home to a variety of wildlife, including black bears, deer, loons, and many species of fish. Proper food storage is essential to avoid attracting bears and other animals. Bear-proof containers are recommended, or hanging food from a tree at a sufficient distance from the ground and away from your campsite.

Weather Precautions

Weather in the Upper Peninsula can be unpredictable. Campers should be prepared for a range of conditions, including cold temperatures even in summer. Always check the forecast before your trip and pack accordingly.

Special Considerations

  • Waste: Human waste should be buried 6-8 inches in the soil and at least 200 feet from water sources.
  • Pets: Pets are allowed but must be under control at all times.
  • Fishing: If you plan to fish, a valid Michigan fishing license is required.
  • Group Size: To reduce impact on the wilderness, group size is limited to a certain number of individuals per site. Check the current regulations for the exact number.
  • Quiet Hours: To maintain the wilderness experience, observe quiet hours from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Emergency Situations

In case of an emergency, it is crucial to have a plan in place as help may be far away. Carrying a means of communication such as a satellite messenger is advisable.

Accessibility

Most backcountry areas are not readily accessible for those with mobility impairments. However, the Sylvania Wilderness does offer some facilities and campsites that are more accessible. Contact the Forest Service for more information on accessibility options.
