Location and Accessibility

Wheeler Peak Campground is one of several campgrounds within Great Basin National Park, which is situated in eastern Nevada near the Utah border. This high-altitude campground is located at the base of Wheeler Peak, the second highest peak in Nevada, offering striking views and access to numerous park features.

The park and campground can be reached by car via Nevada State Route 488, which links to U.S. Route 50, often known as "The Loneliest Road in America."

Campsites and Reservations

Wheeler Peak Campground provides a limited number of campsites; typically around 37 individual sites that accommodate tents and small RVs or trailers. Due to the campground's elevation and alpine environment, there are size limitations for RVs and trailers, usually up to 24 feet in length.

Advanced reservations are recommended, especially during peak season, which runs from June through September. Reservations can be made via the National Recreation Reservation Service. Some sites may be available on a first-come, first-served basis, but availability can never be guaranteed without a reservation.

Facilities and Amenities

The campground offers basic amenities including:

  • Picnic Tables: Each campsite typically has a picnic table.
  • Fire Rings: Campsites often include fire rings for campfires.
  • Restrooms: Vault toilets are available, but there are no flush toilets.
  • Water: Potable water is usually available during the summer months.
  • Food Storage: Bear-proof food storage containers may be present at sites to prevent wildlife encounters.

There are no hookups or dump stations for RVs, no showers, and no electric outlets. Campers must be prepared to practice "Leave No Trace" principles and pack out what they pack in.

Activities and Attractions

Being located within Great Basin National Park, Wheeler Peak Campground is a fantastic base for a variety of outdoor activities:

  • Hiking: Numerous trails are accessible, including the popular hike to the summit of Wheeler Peak, the Alpine Lakes Loop, and the Bristlecone Pine Trail.
  • Stargazing: The park is renowned for its dark skies, perfect for stargazing.
  • Wildlife Viewing: The area is teeming with wildlife, from mule deer to pikas.
  • Scenic Drives: The Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive near the campground offers stunning mountain views.

Weather and Seasonal Information

The campground usually opens in late May or early June and closes in September or October, depending on weather conditions. Due to its elevation—around 10,000 feet—nighttime temperatures can be cold, even in summer. Storms can occur suddenly, and snow is possible. Campers should be well-prepared for a variety of weather conditions.

Safety and Regulations

Ensure familiarity with all park regulations. Key points include:

  • Campfire Safety: Follow restrictions and guidelines for building and extinguishing campfires.
  • Wildlife: Do not feed or approach wildlife, and properly secure food.
  • Altitude Sickness: Be aware of the symptoms and be cautious of the altitude, as the campground is at high elevation.
  • Leave No Trace: Always pack out trash and leave the site as you found it.

For the latest information, including current status, reservations, and any restrictions, it's important to check with the National Park Service or Great Basin National Park's official website before planning your trip.
