Overview

Cougar Rock Campground is a popular camping destination situated in Mount Rainier National Park, Washington. Positioned on the southwest side of the park, it provides convenient access to some of the impressive features of Mount Rainier such as the historic Paradise area. The campground is well-known for its scenic beauty and its proximity to hiking trails.

Campground Details

Opening Dates: The campground typically operates from late May or early June through the end of September, but specific opening and closing dates may vary each year depending on weather conditions and snow levels.

Reservations: Reservations can be made in advance through the National Park Service's reservation system, and are highly recommended due to the campground's popularity, especially during the peak summer months.

Campsites: Cougar Rock has over 170 individual campsites available for tents, trailers, and RVs, though RVs over 35 feet are not recommended due to the winding, narrow roads and limited turnarounds. Each site usually includes a picnic table, fire pit, and food storage locker. Most of the sites are well spaced, offering a good amount of privacy.

Group Campsites: In addition to individual sites, there are also a few group campsites that can accommodate larger parties.

Facilities: The campground offers flush toilets and potable water, but no showers or hook-ups for RVs. There's also a dump station located near the campground entrance.

Activities and Attractions

Hiking: There are numerous trails accessible from or near the campground, including the Wonderland Trail which encircles Mount Rainier. Short walks and more strenuous hikes to waterfalls, valleys, and vista points are also available.

Visitor Centers: The Henry M. Jackson Memorial Visitor Center in Paradise is within a short driving distance. It offers educational exhibits, a gift shop, and ranger-led programs.

Wildlife: The park is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including deer, black bears, and marmots. Campers are urged to store food and scented items in food-storage lockers to prevent attracting animals.

Climate and Weather

The weather can be unpredictable, and even in the summer months, it can be cool and rainy. Always be prepared with layered clothing and waterproof gear.

Important Regulations

  • Food Storage: Proper food storage is mandatory to protect wildlife.

  • Campfires: Campfires are permitted only in established fire rings, and firewood collection within the park is prohibited; firewood can be purchased within the park or from nearby vendors.

  • Pets: Pets are allowed but must be on a leash at all times and are not allowed on trails.

  • Wilderness Permits: For overnight backpacking trips into the backcountry, a wilderness permit is required. These permits are separate from the campground reservation system.

Getting There

Cougar Rock Campground is accessible by the Nisqually Entrance to Mount Rainier National Park, followed by a drive on the Longmire-Paradise road.

Respect the Environment

Lastly, visitors should follow the "Leave No Trace" principles to preserve the park's natural beauty for future generations. This includes packing out all trash, leaving natural objects as you find them, and minimizing the impact of your campsite.
