Overview of Lewis Lake Campground

Lewis Lake Campground is one of the campgrounds located within Yellowstone National Park. Situated at the southern end of Lewis Lake, it provides campers with a relatively secluded and natural camping experience. As one of the park's smaller campgrounds, it offers a quieter atmosphere compared to some of the larger, more crowded sites.

Location

The campground is located near the South Entrance of Yellowstone National Park, about eight miles north of the entrance. It's a convenient location for visitors coming from Grand Teton National Park or those entering the park from the south.

Camping Season

Lewis Lake Campground usually operates from early June to early November, but these dates are subject to change depending on weather conditions and snow levels. It's advisable for visitors to check the current operating dates before planning a trip.

Campsite Details

  • Capacity: There are approximately 85 campsites available.
  • Accommodations: Sites can accommodate tents as well as RVs and trailers up to 25 feet in length (though there are no hookups for RVs).
  • Amenities: Each campsite comes with a picnic table and a fire ring with a grate. Drinking water and vault toilets are available, but there are no shower facilities on-site.
  • Reservations: All sites at Lewis Lake Campground are on a first-come, first-served basis and cannot be reserved in advance.

Activities and Access

  • Fishing: Lewis Lake is known for fishing, with brown, brook, and lake trout being commonly caught species.
  • Boating: Canoeing and kayaking are popular on Lewis Lake, and a boat launch is provided; however, all boats must undergo an aquatic invasive species inspection.
  • Hiking: There are numerous trails accessible from the campground for all levels of hikers, such as the Lewis River Channel and Dogshead trails.
  • Wildlife Viewing: As with much of Yellowstone, the area is great for viewing a variety of wildlife, including bears, which necessitates proper food storage and safety precautions.

Important Regulations

  • Food Storage: Due to frequent bear activity, strict food storage regulations are in place. All food, cooking equipment, and similar scented items must be stored in bear-proof storage boxes (when provided), in vehicles, or suspended at least 10 feet off the ground and 4 feet from any vertical support.
  • Firewood: To prevent the spread of invasive insects, the purchase of certified firewood sold in the park or gathering of dead and down wood is encouraged.
  • Quiet Hours: Quiet hours are typically enforced to ensure a peaceful environment for all campers.
  • Pets: Pets are allowed but must be kept on a leash no longer than six feet and cannot be left unattended or tied to a campsite.

Tips for Visiting

  • Arrive Early: To secure a site, you should plan to arrive early in the day, as sites fill up quickly, especially during peak season.
  • Prepare for Weather: Even in summer, temperatures at Yellowstone can be chilly, especially at night. Pack layers and be prepared for various weather conditions.
  • Leave No Trace: Follow the Leave No Trace principles to help preserve the natural beauty and ecological integrity of Yellowstone National Park.
