Overview

Hearst San Simeon State Park is a state park of California, preserving rocky coastlines, inland mountains, and cultural history along the Pacific coast near San Simeon. The park includes the Santa Rosa Creek Natural Preserve, the San Simeon Natural Preserve, and the Pa-nu Cultural Preserve. It was created to protect its unique ecological and cultural history.

Location

The park is located on California's central coast, roughly halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles, near the town of Cambria, just south of the famous Hearst Castle.

Camping Information

  • Campgrounds: The park offers two main campgrounds for visitors:

    • San Simeon Creek Campground: Offers campsites with fire rings and picnic tables, along with amenities like pay showers and flush toilets. There are around 115 campsites available for RVs and tents.
    • Washburn Campground: Situated further inland at a higher elevation, these sites are primitive, offering a more remote experience. Flush toilets are available, but there are no showers.
  • Reservations: Camping reservations are highly recommended, especially during peak season (late spring to early fall). Reservations can be made through the California State Park reservation system online or by phone.

  • Check-In and Check-Out: Standard check-in and check-out times apply. Typically, check-in is in the afternoon (2 PM or later), and check-out is by noon.

  • Fees: Camping fees are subject to change and vary depending on the site and amenities. Always check the latest fee structure before planning your trip.

  • Wildlife: Wildlife is abundant in the park, with opportunities to see a variety of birds, marine life, and perhaps even larger mammals. Store food properly to avoid attracting animals to your campsite.

  • Regulations: Fires are generally allowed in provided fire rings, but be sure to check current conditions and restrictions due to fire danger. Pets are often allowed in campgrounds but must be kept on leashes.

Activities

  • Hiking: There are several hiking trails in the park, ranging from easy to moderate, offering scenic views of the Pacific Ocean and the surrounding area.
  • Beach Access: Visitors have access to the coastline where they can enjoy beach activities, tide pooling, fishing, and wildlife observation.
  • Hearst Castle: A short drive from the park is Hearst Castle, the famous mansion built by publishing magnate William Randolph Hearst. It is now a museum offering tours (separate admission fees apply).

Seasons and Weather

  • Best Time to Visit: The best time for camping at Hearst San Simeon State Park is during the late spring through early fall when the weather is most favorable.
  • Weather: Coastal weather can be unpredictable; even in summer, evenings can be cool and foggy. Always come prepared with layers of clothing.

Accessibility

  • Some facilities and camping spaces are designed to be accessible to visitors with disabilities. It's best to check with the park in advance to ensure accommodations meet specific needs.

Visitor Services

  • Amenities: Besides basic camping amenities, the park offers limited services, so campers should plan to bring necessary supplies.
