Camping at Vogel State Park
Location and Overview
Vogel State Park, one of Georgia's oldest state parks, is located at the base of Blood Mountain in the Chattahoochee National Forest. The park spans 233 acres and is a short distance from the town of Blairsville. With its picturesque scenery, Vogel is particularly popular during the fall when the Blue Ridge Mountains transform into a rolling blanket of red, yellow, and gold leaves.
Activities and Facilities
Hiking: The park offers a variety of trails, ranging from easy to difficult. One of the most popular is the 4-mile Bear Hair Gap trail which takes hikers around the mountain and offers views of the park. The challenging Coosa Backcountry Trail provides a strenuous hike with rewarding vistas.
Swimming and Boating: Visitors can enjoy the cool mountain lake, which includes a swimming beach. Paddle boats and kayaks are available for rent to use on the 22-acre lake.
Fishing: Trout fishing is popular along Wolf Creek and in the lake. Be sure to follow Georgia fishing regulations and have the proper license.
Picnicking: Picnic tables and shelters are scattered throughout the park, offering pleasant spots for a meal in nature.
Mini-Golf and Playground: A mini-golf course and playground can provide additional recreation for families with children.
Camping Options
Cottages: The park has fully equipped cottages for those wishing to enjoy comfort while surrounded by nature.
Campsites: There are more than 100 tent, trailer, and RV sites available, with some providing pull-through convenience. These sites usually have electric and water hookups, and some may offer sewer hookups as well.
Primitive Camping: For a more rugged experience, backpackers can hike a short distance to primitive camping sites.
Pioneer Campground: Designed for large groups, the pioneer campground offers a more primitive camping experience.
Squirrel's Nest Camping: Unique to Vogel, these are screened-in platforms where groups can sleep under the stars.
