Camping at Branched Oak SRA
Location and Accessibility
Branched Oak State Recreation Area (SRA) is located in southeastern Nebraska, roughly 2.5 miles north of Malcolm and 4 miles northwest of Raymond, NE. The recreation area is about 20 miles from Lincoln, making it easily accessible for a quick getaway.
Campground and Facilities
The area boasts one of the largest campgrounds in the state park system, with over 300 camping pads with electrical hook-ups and an additional 300 non-pad sites without electricity. The facilities here include:
- Modern Restrooms and Showers: Available for camper convenience.
- Dump Stations: Located within the park for proper disposal of waste from RVs and campers.
- Picnic Areas: Equipped with tables and grills.
- Playgrounds: For children to enjoy.
- Boat Ramps: Providing access to the lake for all sorts of water activities.
Activities
- Boating: Branched Oak Lake is the largest of the Salt Valley Lakes with 1,800 acres of water surface, suitable for all kinds of boating activities.
- Fishing: The lake offers excellent opportunities for catching catfish, walleye, crappie, largemouth bass, and bluegill.
- Swimming: There are two designated swimming beaches available, but no lifeguards are on duty.
- Hiking and Biking Trails: Miles of trails accommodate hikers and bikers looking for outdoor exercise or a pleasant stroll.
- Horseback Riding: There is an equestrian area on the west side of the lake with corrals and trails specifically for horseback riding.
Wildlife and Vegetation
The park's landscape encompasses rolling hills, wooded areas, and open prairie. This diverse habitat supports an array of wildlife species such as deer, squirrels, and numerous bird species, making it a good spot for wildlife viewing and bird watching.
Reservation Information
Campsites with electricity are available on a first-come, first-served basis, and reservations for these can be made ahead of time. It's always a good idea to check the latest availability and any restrictions that may apply, especially during peak seasons.
Weather and Best Time to Visit
The park is open year-round; however, the best time to visit is from late spring to early fall when the weather is most accommodating for camping and all recreational activities can be fully enjoyed.
Park Fees
A park entry permit is required for all vehicles entering the park. There are fees for camping, which vary based on the type of site and amenities used. Daily or annual permits can be purchased.
Firewood and Campfires
Firewood can typically be purchased on-site, and campfires are permitted in designated areas. However, always adhere to fire warnings and bans when they are in place to prevent wildfires.
