Overview of Texas National Forests and Grasslands

Texas has four National Forests and one National Grassland, all located in the eastern part of the state. These public lands offer a range of recreational activities like camping, hiking, fishing, and wildlife watching. Here's a list of these areas:

  • Angelina National Forest
  • Davy Crockett National Forest
  • Sabine National Forest
  • Sam Houston National Forest
  • Caddo-Lyndon B. Johnson (LBJ) National Grassland

Camping Information

Camping in Texas National Forests and Grasslands can range from developed campgrounds with numerous amenities to dispersed camping areas with minimal facilities.

Developed Campgrounds: These usually offer picnic tables, fire rings, toilet facilities, and sometimes potable water. Some may even provide hookups for RVs. Examples include Ratcliff Lake in Davy Crockett National Forest and Double Lake in Sam Houston National Forest.

Dispersed Camping: Outside of developed campgrounds, some forests and grasslands offer the opportunity to camp almost anywhere. This form of primitive camping often means no services or facilities and requires campers to follow Leave No Trace principles to preserve the environment.

Reservations and Fees

Reservations: These can be made for some campgrounds through the Recreation.gov website or by phone. Not all sites operate on a reservation system, and many campgrounds accommodate visitors on a first-come, first-served basis.

Fees: Camping fees vary by site and range from inexpensive for basic sites to higher for those with more amenities. Users can expect to pay anywhere from $10 to $50 per night, with some sites offering discounts for seniors or those with access passes.

Rules and Regulations

Fire Safety: Due to occasional drought conditions in Texas, fire restrictions may be in place. Always check current conditions and follow fire safety guidelines.

Wildlife: The forests and grasslands are home to a variety of wildlife. Proper food storage and disposal are crucial to avoid attracting animals to campsites.

Length of Stay: Most areas have a maximum stay limit, commonly 14 days. After reaching the limit, campers must relocate to a different area.

Vehicle Use: Off-road vehicle use is generally not permitted outside designated trails.

Recreational Activities

Hiking: Numerous trails, including sections of the Lone Star Hiking Trail in Sam Houston National Forest, offer diverse hiking opportunities.

Fishing and Boating: Many lakes and rivers are found within these areas, such as Toledo Bend Reservoir in Sabine National Forest, providing excellent opportunities for water activities.

Hunting: Hunting is allowed in designated areas within the National Forests during specific seasons and requires appropriate Texas hunting licenses.

Wildlife Watching: The forests and grasslands host rich ecosystems, making them great spots for bird watching and nature photography.

Preparing for Your Trip

Local Conditions: Check the weather and any alerts or restrictions that might be in place due to wildfires or other natural events.

Pack Adequately: Bring all necessary camping gear, including water if it's not available on-site, and pack out all trash.

Travel Responsibly: Stay on designated roads and trails, respect wildlife, and leave areas as you found them.
