Introduction to Cedar Breaks National Monument

Cedar Breaks National Monument is a natural amphitheater situated in southern Utah in the United States. The monument, which spans across an area of over 6,000 acres, sits at an elevation of over 10,000 feet (3,000 meters). Known for its dramatic views, geologic formations, wildflower meadows, and subalpine forest, Cedar Breaks offers a unique camping experience among its high-elevation landscapes.

Camping Options

Point Supreme Campground:

The main camping area in Cedar Breaks National Monument is the Point Supreme Campground. It generally operates from mid-June to late-September, weather permitting. This campground offers facilities such as restrooms, picnic tables, and fire rings. Campsites are available on a first-come, first-served basis, and reservations are not accepted. Note that the high elevation can bring cold temperatures, even in summer.

Camping Rules and Regulations

Fees and Permits:

  • There are fees for campsite usage which you need to pay upon setting up camp.
  • A permit is not usually required for individual camping but check current regulations before planning your trip.

Fire Regulations:

  • Due to the risk of forest fires, always follow the posted regulations about campfires.
  • Use only the designated fire rings or pits for campfires.

Wildlife:

  • Store food securely and keep a clean camp to deter wildlife from entering your campsite.
  • Never feed wildlife, as it can be harmful to both the animals and humans.

Leave No Trace:

  • Follow Leave No Trace principles by packing out all trash, camping only on durable surfaces, and respecting wildlife and other visitors.

Altitude Sickness:

  • Be aware of the symptoms of altitude sickness since the high elevation can affect some visitors, particularly those who are not acclimatized.

Amenities and Services

While some basic amenities are available at the Point Supreme Campground, visitors should come prepared with their supplies. There are limited services within the monument, and the nearest town with full services is Cedar City, which is located approximately 23 miles to the west of the monument.

Scenic Driving and Viewing:

  • Enjoy the scenic drive along Highway 148, which runs through the monument and offers various overlooks with breathtaking views of the amphitheater.

Hiking:

  • Cedar Breaks boasts a network of trails ranging from easy walks to more challenging hikes. Some popular trails include the Alpine Pond Trail and the Spectra Point/Ramparts Overlook Trail.

Stargazing:

  • The monument's high elevation and remote location make it an excellent spot for stargazing. The park occasionally hosts star parties and astronomy programs.

Photography:

  • Photographers will find plenty of opportunities for capturing stunning landscapes, especially during the wildflower bloom in July and August.

Nature Programs:

  • Join rangers for guided walks and interpretive programs to learn more about the monument's natural and cultural history.

Weather and Best Time to Visit

Summer:

  • Summer offers the warmest weather but still can be chilly, especially at night. It's the best time for hiking and wildflower viewing.

Fall:

  • Fall brings cooler temperatures and changing leaves, offering a colorful display but with the possibility of early snow.

Winter:

  • The monument experiences heavy snowfall and road closures, limiting access for camping and other activities.

Spring:

  • Late spring can still have snow on the ground, but as the snow melts, visitors can enjoy the awakening of the monument's flora.
