Camping at Green Mountain and Finger Lakes National Forests
Overview
Green Mountain and Finger Lakes National Forests are combined administrative units of the U.S. Forest Service. They cover parts of Vermont and New York State, offering a variety of outdoor recreational opportunities, including camping.
Location and Description
Green Mountain National Forest is situated in southwestern and central Vermont, encompassing more than 400,000 acres of diverse, mountainous terrain.
Finger Lakes National Forest is much smaller and is located between Seneca and Cayuga Lakes in the Finger Lakes region of New York State. This National Forest spreads across around 16,000 acres, offering a unique blend of natural features due to its location between two major lakes.
Camping Options
Dispersed Camping:
- In both forests, you can camp outside of developed campgrounds almost anywhere unless otherwise noted by sign or regulation.
- Dispersed camping is free and does not provide any services (like water, trash removal, or bathrooms).
Developed Campgrounds:
- Both forests offer several developed campgrounds with basic amenities such as picnic tables, tent pads, fire rings, and bathroom facilities.
- Some campgrounds may also offer fee-paying amenities like showers or hookups for RVs.
Backcountry Camping:
- For a more secluded experience, backcountry camping is allowed.
- Campers should practice Leave No Trace principles to minimize their impact on the environment.
Reservations and Fees
- Campsites in developed campgrounds may require reservations, which can typically be made through the National Recreation Reservation Service.
- There are fees associated with staying in developed campgrounds, while dispersed and backcountry camping are usually free.
- Always check the latest information via the U.S. Forest Service's website or local ranger stations as fees and reservation policies can change.
Rules and Regulations
- Follow all fire regulations and use established fire rings when available.
- Always pack out what you pack in and dispose of waste properly.
- Quiet hours are typically enforced in campgrounds from 10 PM to 6 AM.
- Pets must be under control at all times.
Seasons and Accessibility
- The best time to camp is typically from late spring to early fall when the weather is more predictable and the temperatures are comfortable.
- Road access to certain areas may be limited during the winter months due to snow, especially in Green Mountain National Forest.
Activities
Aside from camping, both forests offer various activities:
- Hiking: There are trails suited for all levels of hikers, including portions of the Appalachian Trail in Green Mountain National Forest.
- Water Recreation: The Finger Lakes region is noted for excellent fishing, boating, and swimming.
