Brief Introduction

Anacapa Island Campground is situated within Channel Islands National Park, which lies off the coast of Southern California. The campground is located on East Anacapa Island, the closest of the Channel Islands to the mainland, and offers a unique camping experience surrounded by natural beauty and marine wildlife.

How to Get There

Boat Transportation:

  • Access to Anacapa Island is typically via a park concessionaire boat, Island Packers, which operates out of Ventura and Oxnard harbors.
  • Private boats can also be used, but dock facilities are limited and landing is tricky due to the rugged nature of the island.

Kayak:

  • Kayaking to the island is for experienced kayakers only and requires a permit.

Campground Features

Campsites:

  • The campground has a small number of primitive sites (around 7).
  • Each site includes a picnic table and a storage box to protect food from animals. Campsites do not have trees or shade structures.
  • Sites are about a half-mile uphill walk from the dock where visitors are dropped off.

Amenities:

  • Potable water is not available, so you must bring all the water you will need.
  • There are no showers, only pit toilets.

Fire Regulations:

  • Open fires and charcoal grills are prohibited; you can use a camp stove for cooking.

Activities

Hiking:

  • There are a few short trails that offer incredible views, such as the trail to Inspiration Point.
  • Visits to the Anacapa Lighthouse and a walk to see the only permanent, freshwater pond in the Channel Islands are possible.

Wildlife Watching:

  • The island is renowned for seabird nesting colonies, including the western gull, and the famous Channel Islands' endemic scrub jay is present.
  • Marine life such as sea lions, dolphins, and whales can be seen from the island or boat tours.

Snorkeling and Diving:

  • The kelp forests and clear waters around the island are perfect for underwater adventures.

Rules and Regulations

Leave No Trace:

  • As a protected area, the Leave No Trace principles are mandatory; pack out everything you bring in.

Permits:

  • Overnight campers must have a valid permit obtained through the National Park Service reservation system.

Wildlife Interaction:

  • Do not disturb or feed the wildlife. This is crucial for the protection of both visitors and native species.

Limited Facilities:

  • Be prepared for a rustic experience, with no services or conveniences.

Booking and Fees

Reservations:

  • Due to the limited number of campsites, advanced reservations are highly recommended and are made through the National Park Service’s reservation system, Recreation.gov.

Fees:

  • There is a fee for camping and an additional fee for the boat transportation if utilizing the park concessionaire.

Weather and Safety

  • Weather can be unpredictable; fog is common and winds can be strong.
  • Bring appropriate clothing to deal with potentially cold, wet, or hot conditions, as weather can change rapidly.
  • Safety gear like a first aid kit and a whistle is recommended in case of emergencies.
