Location and Accessibility

Atwell Mill Campground is situated in the Mineral King area of Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks in California. The campground is located at an elevation of about 6,650 feet, in a conifer forest and alongside East Fork Kaweah River.

Operating Seasons and Reservations

The campground typically operates from June through October, depending on the weather conditions. The road to Mineral King, Mineral King Road, is steep and winding, and it's important to check for road and facility status updates, as weather-related closures can occur.

Reservations are not used for Atwell Mill Campground. The campsites are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Campsites and Facilities

Atwell Mill Campground features approximately 21 campsites. Each site generally includes:

  • A picnic table
  • A fire ring with a grill
  • A food storage box (bear-proof)

Camping is limited to tents only due to the nature of the road; trailers and RVs are not recommended. There are vault toilets available, but there are no hookups or showers. Furthermore, water may not be available, so it's crucial to bring your own or be prepared to treat water from the nearby river.

Activities and Attractions

Given its location in the Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, the campground provides access to a variety of outdoor activities:

  • Hiking: There are several trails nearby for day hiking and backpacking.
  • Wildlife Watching: The parks are home to a diverse array of wildlife, from black bears to marmots.
  • Sightseeing: Spectacular views of the High Sierra and the giant sequoias can be enjoyed.
  • Photography: With its scenic vistas and natural beauty, the area is a haven for photographers.

Wildlife and Safety

The presence of black bears means that proper food storage is critical. All food, scented items, and trash must be stored in bear-proof boxes at all times, except when being eaten, prepared, or transported.

Regulations

  • Fire Regulations: Check for current fire restrictions before you go.
  • Pets: While pets are allowed, they must be controlled and may not be allowed on all trails.
  • Leave No Trace: Visitors are encouraged to follow Leave No Trace principles to preserve the park’s natural beauty.
