Overview

Tony Grove Campground is a popular site located in the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest in Utah. It's well-known for its beautiful setting near Tony Grove Lake and the surrounding alpine terrain, which offers a cool retreat from the summer heat. The campground provides access to a variety of outdoor activities, including hiking, fishing, wildflower viewing, and wildlife photography.

Location

Tony Grove Campground is situated about 19 miles east of Logan, Utah, in the Logan Canyon area of the Bear River Mountain Range. The elevation at the campground is approximately 8,000 feet, ensuring a cool climate in the summertime.

Access

To reach the campground, visitors travel along Highway 89 to the Tony Grove turnoff (about 7 miles up Logan Canyon from Logan) and then proceed on the Tony Grove Road (Forest Road 003) for about 7 miles to the lake and campground area.

Camping Facilities

  • Campsites: Tony Grove Campground offers several single and a few double-family sites.
  • Amenities: Each campsite typically has a picnic table, fire ring, and grill. Due to its elevation and location, the campground provides flush toilets and drinking water, but no shower facilities are available.
  • RVs: The campground can accommodate some RVs, but it's important to note the length restrictions (usually around 32 feet) because of the narrow, winding road to the campground and the size of the parking spurs.

Recreational Activities

  • Hiking: There are several trails in the area, including the Mt. Naomi Peak Trail and the White Pine Lake Trail. The Tony Grove Nature Trail is an easy loop around the lake that's excellent for a family hike.
  • Wildlife Viewing: The area is plentiful with wildlife, including moose, mountain goats, and a variety of bird species. Visitors are encouraged to bring binoculars and cameras.
  • Fishing: Tony Grove Lake is home to a good population of trout, and anglers will enjoy the opportunity to fish in these high alpine waters.
  • Wildflowers: In July and August, the meadows around Tony Grove are renowned for their spectacular wildflowers.
  • Boating: Canoeing and kayaking are popular on the lake, although no motorized boats are allowed.

Reservations and Fees

  • Reservations: Many of the sites at Tony Grove Campground can be reserved in advance through a national reservation service. There are also some first-come, first-served sites.
  • Fees: There is a daily fee for camping, which may vary by site selection (single, double) and amenities.

Season of Operation

The campground typically operates from early July to early September, depending on snow conditions and weather. Exact opening and closing dates for the season can vary each year and should be verified through the Forest Service or the national reservation website.

Considerations

  • Altitude: Due to the high elevation, some visitors may experience altitude sickness. It's important to acclimate and stay hydrated.
  • Weather: Weather can be unpredictable, and nighttime temperatures can be cold, even in summer.
  • Wildlife: Food storage regulations are in place to deter bears and other wildlife. Be sure to store all food and scented items appropriately to protect both yourself and the animals.
  • Leave No Trace: Visitors are encouraged to follow Leave No Trace principles to preserve the beauty and cleanliness of the campground and surrounding area.
